About the Congress

An integrated science of vine and wine

Tokaj Vine and Wine Congress is a four-day international gathering dedicated to advancing the science, sustainability and culture of vine and wine - from the vineyard ecosystem to the wine economy.

Tokaj is a place where viticulture has shaped the landscape, the economy and the culture for centuries. It is also the natural home for a new kind of conversation about wine - one that connects the laboratory with the vineyard, and the vineyard with the policy table.

Why integrated science

Traditional wine economics has often focused on price, yield and trade, while environmental and social dimensions have remained on the margins. The congress promotes a transdisciplinary approach: an integrated vine and wine science where viticulture, oenology, ecology, economics, health and heritage inform one another.

Regenerative viticulture

Climate change is redrawing the map of viticulture. We dedicate space to climate-resilient vineyard ecosystems - soil conservation, cover cropping, biodiversity, integrated pest management, and the breeding of disease-resistant grape varieties.

Circular bioeconomy

Marc, lees, pomace, vine leaves and green waste are no longer treated as waste streams. Their polyphenols, fibres and bioactive compounds power a circular bioeconomy with applications in functional foods, cosmetics, organic plant protection and bioenergy - generating new value beyond wine itself.

The Tokaj wine region

Hosting the congress in Sárospatak places these scientific conversations inside a living wine heritage landscape. Field visits, professional programmes and cultural programme are woven into the four days alongside the scientific sessions.

International collaboration

TVWC brings together universities, research institutes, vintners and policy-makers from across Europe and beyond. The congress also serves as a platform for the next generation of vine and wine scientists - supporting new BSc and MSc programmes in integrated vine and wine science.
